How I Created a Sustainable Casket Spray for My Nature-Loving Aunt's Funeral

A Florist's Homage to Her Aunt's Passion for the Environment

Losing a loved one is never easy, but when my aunt passed away last February, I wanted to make sure her funeral reflected her values and passions. My aunt was a nature lover and a spiritual woman who believed in taking care of the earth, so I decided to create a casket spray that included bits of nature and was fully compostable and biodegradable.

To find the materials for the casket spray, I went to my local floral exchange market, the Twin Cities Floral Exchange, where I found most of the dried pieces I needed, including eucalyptus, poppy pods, roses, peonies, mums, and more. I made sure to choose only locally-grown and dried materials to minimize the environmental impact of my tribute.

As the focal point of the casket spray, I used a dried hydrangea and a portion of a paper wasp nest that I found in the park while on a walk on the day I found out that my aunt had died. It felt like a sign from her that I should use it in her tribute. The casket spray itself was made of a mache base, twine string, sticks and branches, and all dried materials, so it was fully compostable and biodegradable.

Creating the casket spray was a cathartic and meaningful process for me. It allowed me to honor my aunt's memory and her commitment to sustainability, and to express my own grief and love through the beauty of natural materials. It was a fitting tribute to a woman who cared deeply for the environment and all its wonders.

If you're looking for a way to pay homage to a loved one who was passionate about sustainability and nature, consider creating a fully compostable and biodegradable casket spray using locally-grown and dried materials. It's a meaningful and eco-friendly tribute that will honor their memory in a beautiful and sustainable way. Order one in today in our shop.
